Joining the club provides the opportunity to be part of a community of racing enthusiasts and experience the thrill of ownership without the financial burden. With Brian and his team at the helm, club members are sure to enjoy an unforgettable racing experience.
Brian was born in Newcastle upon Tyne on 28th June 1952, coinciding with the day the favourite horse, Souepi, won the Pitmen’s Derby (Northumberland Plate) at Newcastle’s Gosforth Park racecourse. He grew up in a family of eight siblings and his father worked as a shipbuilder on Tyneside while his mother was a cleaner at a local hospital.
In his early years, Brian was deeply passionate about football and even displayed his talent on the pitch. However, he was considered too small to make it as a professional footballer due to his height of just 4ft 9″. This led him to contemplate a career in horse racing and at the age of 14, he mounted his first horse. One year later, Brian left school to pursue his passion for horse racing and, at 17, he obtained his conditional jockeys’ license.
Brian spent the next 20 years as a National Hunt jockey, during which time he rode many horses, including the great Tex. According to Brian, Tex was the best horse he rode, and they achieved a memorable victory in a handicap chase over the legendary Tingle Creek in 1976. In his final year as a race jockey, Brian acquired his trainers’ license, and in 1989, he joined the training ranks proper after relinquishing his jockey’s license.
Brian’s love of horse racing and his ability to identify and nurture the potential of horses has led to his success as a dual-purpose trainer. He and his wife, Claire, have established the Brian Ellison Racing Club to give horse racing enthusiasts a taste of what it’s like to be an owner without having to pay the associated fees. The club’s horses are carefully selected to provide members with enjoyment and excitement, and since its launch in Autumn 2017, the club has enjoyed over 50 winners and numerous placings.
Brian’s Spring Cottage Stables in Malton, North Yorkshire, boasts top-class training facilities and a dedicated team of staff who work hard to produce top-quality horses that are racing to win, including our own Grid Iron Maiden. Brian’s honest approach to training and his ability to bring out the best in horses has earned him a reputation as one of the top dual-purpose trainers in the UK.
As a result, members of the Brian Ellison Racing Club can benefit from attending races with the club all year round.
